Originally from Freehold, New Jersey, (down the shore!) I am proud to now call myself a Chicagoan. Since moving to the Windy City area for graduate school at Northwestern University, I have led a busy and productive artistic life as a director, dialect coach, and university faculty member mentoring and training the next generation of artists in Chicago. I began my career as a musical theatre performer and still happily retain my musical theatre nerd card in addition to carrying with me a body of work that has spanned significant time in the new play development sector, arts leadership, education, and theatre spaces of every shape and kind.
In my Chicago life I've directed to critical praise at Steppenwolf, The Side Project, Northwestern and others. I've collaborated with companies such as Strawdog, American Blues Theatre and have assisted great artists at Steppenwolf, Court, and Chicago Shakespeare here in town. Skilled and experienced in new work development, in Chicago I've led the premiere of Emily Schwend's South of Settling at Steppenwolf. the world premiere of What to Listen For by acclaimed playwright Kathleen Tolan (The Side Project), and helmed the workshop of Joel Drake Johnson’s new play 22 Mistakes at Next Theatre in Evanston. Recent other directing: The Size of the World(Redtwist); 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Northwestern U. Mainstage ’13); One, A Radio Play by Terrence Mosley (POP Theatre); The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and The Mistakes Madeline Made (Northwestern).
Prior to arriving in this fair city, and as Artistic Associate at Bristol Riverside Theatre outside of Philadelphia, Adam guided Bridget Carpenter’s Up; Zakiyyah Alexander’s Sick?; Michael Elyanow’s Lullaby; Brett Neveu’s Harmless; and Quiara Allegria Hudes’ Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue (BRT). Additional directing credits: Stinky Flowers and the Bad Banana (Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Swimming in the Shallows, The Wheel: The Musical, Through The Valley, and Parade. Assistant Directing: Orlando (Court Theatre, d. Jessica Thebus), A Parallelogram (Anna D. Shapiro), and Detroit (Austin Pendleton) at Steppenwolf, I Am My Own Wife (Hartford Stage, Jeremy Cohen).
I've worked with some of the finest theatre practitioners in the country and with institutions of all shapes and sizes. I currently serve as Adjunct Voice and Performance faculty at Columbia College Chicago and at Northwestern University, as performance and directing faculty at Northeastern Illinois University and Chicago Academy for the Arts. I work often and continuously is a professional dialect coach. I have taught directing at North Central College as well guest classes at Temple University in Philadelphia.
